I didn’t want to be forced into pairing Ani with the obvious choice of Ahsoka that he was intended for. So I gave Barriss a shot. And I was very surprised by how well this does. For me, reading Ani’s ability I thought, that’s decent. But after playing with him you see how powerful the ability can truly be. Hard mulligan for an ideal opening hand with a Steadfast, turn that Bitter Rivalry downside into a wicked upside.
Barriss Offee - Studious Padawan combo cards:
- Niman Mastery: there’s a reason people are selling this card/die for ridiculous amounts. Probably one of the best upgrades in the game, IMO. I typically play it on Anakin to really take advantage of Pushing Slash. Roll those 4’s all day baby, or resolve the Niman to turn an Ani to a 4 (turning a Barriss die to +2) and usually using the secondary turn defensively if Barriss isn’t upgraded, and then with the final turn off the Slash turning Ani’s second die to a 4 as well, or 2 if money is short.
- Force Focus: AKA the poor man’s Niman. It’s special is actually really good though for turning as well.
- You Were My Friend: I love the versatility of this card in the deck. It can be used offensively or defensively OR defensively with a dash of offensive. If you’re fortunate enough to be playing another heavy deck, turn one of their dice to the lowest melee damage side, turning Barriss’ die as well and if you got enough blue remove it. Rad little card.
- Acute Awareness: great little surprise if you’re playing against another deck with Niman or other turning cards as well.
- Salt Flats - Crait: our battlefield allows us to turn Ani’s die and a Barriss. Pretty stellar.
Anakin Skywalker - Dedicated Mentor combo cards:
- Nullify: starting with the card clearly made for our boy. Such solid removal for basically no cost thanks to Ani’s ability.
- Pacify: have 2 shields to get rid of that fat damage die? Sure. I’m gonna steal one back in a second anyway.
If Ani dies, I’ll override a Niman/Force Focus on Barriss with a Shien Mastery to help close out the game. Merchant Freighter (one of the best commons in the game) helps alleviate the stress of resources in Mono Blue so much.
Note: if I owned Anakin’s Lightsaber it would probably be in this deck but alas I do not!
